I kind of hate to write this review because 2 years ago when I first moved to Bernardsville this was the first place that I ate and I thought it was really a decent place for the money and other then having slow service I was quite happy with it. In fact at that time they had a bone in rib eye on the menu that was as good as any I had in any steak house but evidently something has happened…
Saturday night M and I got a late start for dinner and I did not feel like driving so we walked over to the Bernardsville Café for dinner. It was a cool night so we both started with a bowl of soup I had the corn and cheese soup and M had the pumpkin soup. The corn and cheese soup was ok but didn’t have a whole lot of flavor and was not very hot, the pumpkin also was not very hot and had way to much what I am assuming was nutmeg in it the spice overpowered the mild pumpkin flavor and made the soup almost inedible. For our main course I had a mushroom Swiss burger which had a very boring flavor and could have used some salt and pepper. I ordered it medium and it was very well done and dry. M ordered salmon and vegetables; the fish was charred black on one side and was also very dry. I didn’t try the veggies but there appearance was not very appetizing and M didn’t eat them so they must not have been very good.
The waitress was very nice and attentive which is always a good thing and the food actually came out fairly quickly but it was not worth the money and I was very disappointed overall. There was one other thing that I did not like and maybe it was just because I was already turned off by my dining experience but on the folder that they bring you your check in they had a big sticker that is was ok to pay with a credit card but they would appreciate it if you tipped in cash. I am not sure why that bothered me but it did. So needless to say I don’t know if I will go back to the Bernardsville Café anytime soon but if I do I will let you know what that experience holds.
For now this is the food dude wishing you good eats
